Nenana Railroad Depot Restoration, Nenana, Alaska, 2001-2002:
On November 27, 2001, the firm of Combs & Combs, AIA (hereafter C & C) was contracted to conduct a study of damage to the Historic Nenana Railroad Depot from an incident in which a vehicle drove into the building on March 22, 2001. This Contract was established through the attorney for their client Allstate Insurance Company. Because of Sam Combs’s historic preservation experience over the past 25 years, his task was to look at the damage, the resulting restoration work to date and restoration work to be completed in the future. This work was and is to bring the structure (which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places) back into compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. C & C along with it’s Professional Construction Estimation Consultant, HMS, Inc.’s additional task was to prepare an estimate of what the restoration work should have cost if all work was completed by the end of the construction season, i.e., the Fall of 2001. C & C did historic research into the physical development of the Nenana Railroad Depot through the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, the National Archives Branch here in Anchorage, and many other sources. The Depot was constructed in 1923 prior to President Harding’s trip to Alaska to drive the golden spike uniting the railroad from Fairbanks and from Anchorage.
